John Digweed uses the two-disc format as a personal route through the house, techno, disco, ambient, acid and downtempo records that shaped his musical taste before and around the rise of the British club scene. The selection moves from the spacious mood of Voices Of Africa and The Grid to tougher house grooves, classic trance tension, acid textures and landmark remixes by names such as Larry Levan, Morales, Scott Hardkiss and Underworld. The first disc has the stronger sense of discovery: it opens with atmospheric material, passes through Chicago and garage references, and gradually builds toward Dance 2 Trance – We Came In Peace, Desert Storm and Underworld’s Jamscraper Mix. The second disc expands the archive with deep and progressive house cuts before closing on memorable versions of DJ H. – Come On Boy and The Cure – A Forest. The first CD has the most convincing arc, moving from spacious downtempo and dub-influenced textures into tougher house, classic trance tension and the heavyweight finish of Underworld’s “Jamscraper Mix.” CD2 is more eclectic and occasionally less focused, but tracks such as the Larry Levan remix of “Come On Boy,” the Underworld version of “Cool Kids Of Death,” and Mark Saunders’ mix of “A Forest” give the compilation serious late-night and crate-digger appeal. The CD-Rip preserves the character of these older productions, from dry drum-machine punch to warm, slightly rough analogue low end.
