An Introduction to Jimmy Reed that doesn’t include his Vee Jay-era standards — «Baby, What You Want Me to Do,» «Bright Lights, Big City,» «Honest I Do,» «You Don’t Have to Go,» «Going to New York,» «Ain’t That Lovin’ You Baby» — definitely isn’t one! This material is culled from Reed’s late-’60s recordings on ABC Bluesway, a period when his alcoholism and epilepsy caught up with him, naturally affecting the quality of his work. A bit of Reed’s signature swamp blues via the Windy City sound manages to shine through occasionally, but in no way should these cuts be qualified as an introduction.
